PERU, Ind. (WISH) - Wednesday's tornado not only took a shot at trees and buildings but also the pocketbook for some. Peru's city golf course has already had to cancel two tournaments.
On a perfect summer evening, the Peru Municipal Golf Course would normally be buzzing with competition.
But the club house is locked.
The carts are put in park.
"I've been in the business for about 15 years, thought I saw it all, but I hadn't seen it like this," said Golf Course Superintendent, Adrian Roach.
The only competition Thursday was how many of the 75 downed trees could workers clear to get golfers back on the course and money back in their cash register.
"We had our Club Championship this weekend so that got cancelled, but our phones have been ringing off the hook today to see when we're going to be open so that's been kind of nice," said Roach.
Originally talk around the golf course was of straight line winds, then Thursday afternoon the National Weather Service confirmed the damage was the result of an EF-1 tornado.
"It did look like all the damage was in one straight line so that's why initially it did look like straight line winds, also from the radar imagery, but because the path was so narrow that was maybe the first hint that this could've been a tornado that moved through that they're now confirming," said WISH TV Meteorologist, Robb Ellis.
Just as quickly as the storm moved through, volunteers have been cutting and clearing the trees at Peru Muni, determined not to let Mother Nature win this round.
"It was nice to see everybody come out and help and that's what you get in a small town," said Roach.
The Peru Municipal Golf Course hopes to be back to full operations by mid next week.
