Journey To Elsewhere (WWC)

(WWC) Journey to Elsewhere (Part 1)
Written by Hunter Buehler

It was a cold December morning, snow blew through the air. Everything on the island of Naltoh seemed normal, yet for one young husband and wife, a huge change was happening. A child was being born. Whisper of the newest arrival spread through the streets of the island. The island of Naltoh was a strictly forbidden town, no mortal dared to cross into their territory. The people of Naltoh were strongly banded together, they had each other?s backs. This was because they were the same. Not exactly the same, but the same race. The baby was then held by the father, and the father was proud. Proud that his child was the same, the way his child had the same aspects of the father, the father was proud that his son would love and protect his parents, but they thought wrong.
This is the story of a child who changes. This is the story of a man who thrives for more. This is the story of a Pure Blood vampire named Jack Hurth, born on one cold December morning on the island of Naltoh.

?Change is inevitable, how you change, is your destiny.?

The now ten year-old child was growing fast for his race. He had now a full set of teeth, including two sharp fangs that pointed downward. He stared out the window, he watched as snow fell like it almost always did on the island.
?Happy birthday Jack!? A soothing voice shouted from behind him. It was his mother. ?What would you like to do on your birthday Jack?? His mother asked. Now, his mother was expecting Jack to ask for a toy, maybe a knife, but Jack had something else in mind, Jack was a curious child and asked for something that caught his mother by surprise.
?I want to see what it?s like out there.? Jack said pointing out into the distance.
?Wh-Where?? Jacks mom asked shocked.
?Off the island!? Jack replied. ?I want to see other places! I hear mutters of it on rare occasions, why haven?t we seen other places in this world?? It was an absurd wish, but Jack thrived for experience, Jack needed to see the land off the island, he needed to set foot on the land that wasn?t their own. Jacks mom hesitated, then went inside their home to inform the father of the request.
?Do you know what you?re son just wished to do for his birthday?? His mom said, entering the room.. His father looked up.
?What would that be?? His father replied calmly.
?He wants to go outside, off the island to the other town!? His mother said practically shouting. Jack?s father just smiled though.
?It is okay, my love, he will need to work as a messenger one day, why not send him out now?? Jack?s mother sighed in agreement, but they didn?t know what a mistake they were making.
Bordering the island was the Ocean of Corruption, filled with adventure and uncertainties. West of the island of Naltoh was an island province, composed of several kingdoms and villages. The province?s name has been forgotten, for truly the kingdoms rule themselves. Jack, though, was not aware of other races. The vampires were the only race as far as Jack knew. Of course there were humans, but they were only in books.
Their small boat journeyed several miles across the ocean that surrounded their town. Fog hid the town so really all it was for an outsider was a vast, untraveled, ocean. Everyone in the kingdom knew what was there, most of them didn?t know what type of people lived there though. They arrived about a half of a mile away from the kingdom they were going too. Jack loved what he saw when he arrived. Mountains stood thousands of feet above to his left, to his right he could see the torch lights of a kingdom. The sun had set by the time they arrived, and the family walked towards the town, their son gleaming with joy.
They finally reached the kingdom, the gates were wide open as if they were expecting the family. Upon walking in, the child was amazed, people walked through the streets, shops and buildings stood tall.
?Welcome Jack,? His father began smiling. ?to the kingdom of Stalloth.?
Jack looked around, this was nothing like his town. His town had little shops, few people roamed the streets, and in comparison was a dark, devastated place to this kingdom. Jack?s happiness was slowly fading and being replaced with realization, then with fear. He watched as people laughed and talked. Why were their teeth so different? What?s wrong with these people?
?Mom?? Jack said a little bit louder than he needed to. His mom sensed the fear in his voice, and approached him gently.
?What is it dear?? She asked, holding Jack in her arms.
?What?s wrong with these people?? Jack whispered in her ear. The whisper was loud enough to be heard by the father, so he decided to answer this question.
?We will rent a room in the inn, we will tell you there, son.? He said smiling. Yet behind his smile, there was a stern, serious tone that Jack sensed, and feared that as well. The inn was large and looked to have 8 rooms on the first and second floor. Their room was on the second floor, it was a small room with two beds, a small cabinet, and a wardrobe. Jack sat down on the bed by the window, in which he hoped would be his for the night. His parents sat next to him, on each side of him, like they were trapping him.
?You have noticed that there are different people outside of our town.? His father said gently to his son. ?They are not evil, they are just different.?
?Then who is.? The son said sternly.
?What? What do you mean??
?If they aren?t evil then we must be right?? Jack was slowly becoming more and more angry.
?No one is evil.? His mother said rubbing Jack?s back. ?Those people are humans, and we are-?
?Vampires?? Jack interrupted. ?I know that already.? Jack knew very little, yet so much, sometimes he would hear people talking about vampires and knew that they were what they talked about.
?Yes.? Jacks mother said smiling.
?While were here we might as well tell you some things we?ve been hiding,? His father said. ?Vampires, they cannot go into the sun. I?m sure you know what the sun is, but you haven?t seen it, you can only roam at night or when clouds block out the sun. Also, you have been drinking blood from a cup your whole life, you will need to feed off of the humans by biting them. Also, be careful who you bite you always hold the risk to infect them. You, you?re a Pure Blood, when you infect someone they become a vampire, not a Pure Blood.?
Jack was shocked, so much was being revealed to him so fast, but why? Why was Jack?s father rushing everything to Jack?s head now. He laid down his bed, this signaled his parents to lay in their own. ?But wait,? Jack said. ?The only Pure Bloods, are we the only Pure Bloods??
?Yes,? his mother replied sleepily, ?Only the people of Naltoh.? At that his parents fell asleep. Jack however, he did not, he looked out the window all night, he watched as the normal people lived their lives, how the normal people went to their homes to eat a nice hot meal, how the normal people did not feed off of each other. In the early morning Jack decided his father didn?t tell him enough, that Jack had to do research for himself.
At dawn, the family was beginning their journey home, they left the gates of the kingdom and walked to where their boat had been. They got in the boat and then Jack?s father said the first words of the morning, smiling.
?Hope you enjoyed your birthday son.? Jack simply nodded, for him, it was not any normal day, it was the beginning of a change. What the family didn?t know was that there were people living on the outskirts of the kingdom, and those people were watching them. Those people disliked Jacks kind, and those people sensed the uncertainty inside Jack. For them this was not any normal day, it was the beginning of a change.
Jack was 14 when he set off to the kingdom alone. He always traveled with the other messengers, but today was the first day he was allowed to go alone. Jack remembered the day a little more than 4 years ago, and was going to do what he wanted to do then. He would do his job, but it only took minutes to complete his task, and he had a week. Upon arriving to the kingdom he delivered the goods to the market, and received his pay, he would use the money to stay at the inn. It was morning though, so Jack decided to start his research early. He went to a small library and found a few interesting titles. Vampirism and the Disease, and The Dangers of a Pure Blood, there was one that caught his eye and he wanted to read the most, Vampires and Humans: How they Relate. So Jack read, he read and read the information most people on his island did not know. He read about how powerful vampires are, especially Pure Bloods. The more Jack read, the more he began to hate himself, and the more he hated himself, the more he hated his kind. The books were written by humans, so most aspects tried to make vampires seem evil. As far as Jack was concerned he was evil, so was his race.
I am a soulless, heartless, being. Jack thought. Then Jack began to thrive for a beating heart, Jack thrived to be a human. He read about religion and holy water, and how vampires were the enemy of religion. So he went to the temple and asked for related items and books on religion. He began to venture down the path of becoming human, he studied the religious books and began to pray, slowly his skin became less pale, his teeth less sharp. It was said to be impossible for a Pure Blood to turn into a human, but after three years, Jack looked human.
For the final months of his change, Jack isolated himself from the people of Naltoh, his parents hadn?t seen him in months, and Jack was readying to journey back to his home in Naltoh after his 6 month stay in Stalloth. On his way back he thought about what he would say to his parents, how they would react. Jack was a human now, he didn?t drink the blood of humans, and needed to rest. The people who watched Jack and his family arrive on Jack?s birthday 7 years ago, the people who disliked his kind, were watching Jack for 7 years. They knew what he now was and they knew he was going back to Naltoh. Those people were one step ahead of Jack.
As Jack approached the island and he saw smoke and a flame, a flame that grew larger and larger. Is this their way of welcoming me back? A large bonfire? Jack was confused. Soon after the first sight of flames came more flames, then the shrieks of children and woman, the moaning of dying men. Jack arrived on the island and went into his parents? house, he didn?t see them so he took his father?s sword out of its case. Who do I fight for? Jack wanted to defend his town, but he was a human now, and humans resented the vampires. His parents came down to the sight of his son.
?You?ve come to defend us! Thank you my-? As Jack turned around, his mother stopped mid-sentence and showed shock and only shock on her face. ?You-you?re a??
?Human?? Jack answered, smiling. ?I have a soul now, I?m normal.?
?Perhaps it isn?t too late to change you back.? Jack?s father said approaching him.
?No, I?m a human and I am staying that way!? Jack said, using his sword to go into a defensive pose.
?You are a vampire!? Jack?s father shouted angrily, leaping at him. Jack stabbed his sword through his father?s arm, and the arm fell off. Jack?s father fell to the ground, moaning. Jack couldn?t take it, he was a human wasn?t he? During a battle against humans and vampires, he needed to support his own kind, right? So he lifted his sword and lowered it quickly into his father?s head. It must have looked awful for his mother shrieked a horrible shriek that made Jacks ears bleed.
Jack rose a hand to his ear. ?Bitch,? he muttered. ?Last mistake you?ll ever make!? Jack said to his mother, approaching her offensively.
?No, Jack, please.? His mom begged. Before Jack could think he slashed his sword through his mother?s stomach and she fell over, and died. His mother?s shriek attracted the humans into the house. They saw a human who stood above his dead parents. They saw a human who they have been watching for seven years, and smiled, then walked away. Jack knelt next to his parents, and smiled. He stood up and walked outside his house. The town was on fire, the humans were gone, and there were no signs of life, the humans have won.
On that thought, Jack left to Stalloth, to start his life over. This time, he wasn?t Jack Hurst, he was Jesse, Jesse Dark. Jesse entered Stalloth, with his sword on his back, and began his life as a shop owner. He met many people and became a well-respected man in the kingdom. One evening he encountered a beautiful woman on the street, she bumped into him and fell over.
?Oh, are you okay? I am so sorry? Jesse said offering a hand to help her up.
?I?m fine, it was my fault I?m sorry.? She said smiling at Jesse.
?What?s your name?? Jesse asked lifting her up.
?Lydia.? She said. They smiled at each other, it was love at first sight. She moved in with him at the upper floor of the shop. Soon after, they got married at the temple. They loved each other so much that she didn?t need to know about his past, she loved him for his present self, and wanted to be his future. The two lived rich lives, they didn?t have a lot of money, they were rich with happiness. Less than 5 months after they were married, Lydia was pregnant.
?What shall we name our child?? Lydia said excitedly.
?I don?t know, if it?s a boy how about Gregory.? Jesse said with a huge grin.
?And if it?s a girl??
Jesse thought for a moment. ?How about Nell??
?Well, what about something more beautiful like, like-?
?Like a rose?? Jesse said.
?Yes! If it?s a daughter can we name her Rose?? Lydia said, laying down.
?Sure my love.? Jesse said lying down next to his wife. ?Sure,?
Later that year, their daughter Rose was born. They raised her as any normal human, with love and care. At that point in time, Jesse?s life was perfect, he couldn?t imagine his life getting any better. They taught Rose the arts, and how to read, and Rose became known throughout the town. Jesse had finally moved on from his past, as far as he was concerned it never existed.
They raised her for 6 years like this, but on one night Jesse?s past would come back to haunt him. The shop had just closed for the night, Rose was sleeping and her parents were just getting to bed. A large clatter arose from Rose?s room, and a few shrieks followed. Jesse immediately stood up but Lydia motioned for him to lie back down.
?I?ll handle this one.? Lydia said walking out of the room. Jesse smiled as Lydia walked out of the room, he was almost sleeping when a loud scream came from another room. It was the cry of his daughter.
?No! Daddy help!? Jesse immediately rose and ran to his daughters cry for help. Upon entering the doorway, his wife laid motionless on the floor, dead. A woman stood on the other side of the room, she was standing over Rose who was bleeding down her neck.
?Hello Jack,? The woman shouted walking towards the man kneeling next to his dead wife. ?I?m Raven, and I?ve been sent for you.? Raven knelt down on the opposite side of Lydia, and ripped the knife out of her stomach. Jesse made an effort to perform a quick dash to Rose, and succeeded.
?Don?t worry,? Raven said approaching the father holding his daughter. ?She can come with us.? Raven took a knife out and pointed at first Jesse than Rose. ?Come with me if you want to live.? Raven held the knife close to Jesse?s neck and grabbed Rose by her hair. Few towns people saw, it was late at night by now, but those who did didn?t say anything, they knew better than to intrude in another?s business. They walked out the gate, past three dead guards and far into the wilderness.
After a while, Raven left the path completely with no civilization or signs of other beings in sight. Rose was loud, crying and squirming, she wanted to go home. They were walking through hills now, covered in snow.
?Let me go!? She screamed, and Raven did, Raven also pushed her down the side of the hill with her foot.
?No! We need to get my daughter, now!? Jesse said, watching his daughter fall then lie in the snow at the bottom of the hill. Raven pulled on his neck, choking him.
?She?ll be fine.? Raven shouted. They walked for several miles, Jesse was helpless, his life was ruined, he had become what he was before. Once again he had become Jack, Jack Hurst.
After many hours, it looked as if they had reached their destination. It was a dark, gloomy and forbidden looking cave. Jack was not the happy when Raven pulled him inside the cave. For a little while, it was pitch black inside the cave, he could not see anything but heard little noises from the walls of the cave. Could it have been the echo of his footsteps? Jack didn?t think so. He ignored the noise for now, and tried to navigate throughout the cave. Soon a light appeared, just a torch light but then there were many torches, then a large gap emerged to show a collection of light.
Upon walking towards the gap, Jack saw an underground town, with a farm and residences dug into the side of the cave. The town did not look to house more than 20 people, making it not much of a town at all. There was a stairway down into the village and Jack assumed that was where Raven wanted him to go. Raven had let up on Jack, removing the knife from his neck, but she still walked very close to Jack, as so he could feel her cold breath run down his neck and onto his shoulders. By this point Jack had figured everything out, Raven was a vampire, the people in this village looking at him were vampires, and that?s why he was here.
Jack saw many faces study him, he was a human, so what was he doing in this village. Raven must have given them a reassuring glance for they did not stare for long nor make any threatening looks at Jack. Raven guided Jack to where they were going. Only three people walked up to Jack, two men and a woman. They were following him, Jack did not look back to check, but he could feel that they were following closely, not as close as Rose, but closely. Raven motioned for him to enter a room that looked like it could be her residence.
?Take a seat Jack,? Raven said. ?No need to be afraid anymore.?
?No need to be afraid?? Jack said, ?You threw my daughter down the hill and abandoned her! You killed my wife!? Jack looked more enraged than scared.
?Jack, were not as evil as you think. I did what I needed to do. Your daughter will be fine.? Raven said trying to reassure Jack.
?You left my daughter stranded in the snow at the foot of that hill, if she would have fell the wrong way she would have died right away! And my wife, you killed her.?
?You needed to be deterred from your family, your wife was a human, she wouldn?t have helped us in any way at all. Now please, try to relax yourself.?
Jack tried to do so, but it was hard. He worried most for his daughter, she would die soon, for only a vampire could survive those conditions. ?What do you want from me?? Jack asked.
?Fahl will tell you, he knows everything by heart.? Raven said pointing to a man in the far corner of the room. Fahl was a tall man with dark clothing. He stood up and walked towards Jack. He sat down across from him and looked him in the eyes with a cold, stone stare.
?We are desperate,? Fahl began, ?The only Pure Bloods who still exist roam this cave, except for four. Four people we have not found. In order to continue our race we need to reproduce, and some of us, we have gone many hundreds of years without having intercourse, and we cannot continue the line of Pure Bloods. You see, a Pure Blood is given the ability to reproduce, creating a more natural form of spreading vampirism. However, not all vampires can reproduce, once exposed to the disease that creates vampirism, it lingers with the infected, making it so all their bodily functions shut down. We will need you to help us continue the vampire race.?
?But, but. I am not a vampire anymore.? Jack stuttered, ?I am not of any use to you.?
?Oh but you are!? Raven added smiling. ?You still have Pure Blood of a vampire inside of you, once we infect you, you will become a Pure Blood again!?
?What? No, I?m staying human, I won?t become a sick vampire ever again!?
Raven looked at Fahl. ?Then we?ll have to do it by force.? Fahl said angrily, motioning to Raven. The three vampires that had followed him and Raven into the room exited, Raven blocked off the exit so that it was just her and Jack. Raven stepped over to Jack and lowered her mouth to Jack?s neck. Jack tried to resist, but his strength was no match for a vampires. Raven bit softly, into Jack?s neck, Jack felt a small puncture, then blood trickling down his neck. Raven left the room sealing the door behind her.
A few days later, Raven started to frequently visit Jack. He normally associated Raven with a dark presence after she killed his wife, but after seeing what was going on it wasn?t all Raven?s doing. Fahl was the one who controlled everyone around here, the way he walked with an over sense of pride. Slowly Jack became more vampire-like than before. Fangs grew in, his skin became pale. Jack sighed as his humanity and past faded away. He looked at Raven who almost looked as if she was guilty about the things she had done to him.
Many weeks passed before Fahl came in, he looked at Jack and smiled.
?You?re one of us now Jack.? He said grinning. But this smile, it was no ordinary smile, it was a devilish smile haunting smile with horrible intentions. Jack?s keen sense had return, and one of the first things he detected was that smile, Jack knew Fahl wanted to do something horrible with him, and Jack would just be a small part of his plan. Something came across Jack, a quick rush of anger and adrenaline. Jack pushed Fahl with great force, sending him flying into the next wall. Jack just ran from there, he ran until he reached the cave they went in to enter, Jack heard people following him, but didn?t look back.
After running for about 20 minutes, Jack knew he was safe, but he ran farther and farther for hours. Jack ran until he reached water, this body of water made up the Ocean of Corruption. The ocean bordered the province he lived in, he had never been taught the name of the province, there were only kingdoms and villages that he was told about. The Ocean of Corruption was never traveled by the people on the island, so why name the place they roam. Is there a name for our island? Jack wondered. He forgot the question, he needed to find shelter, and fast. It was almost sunrise, and he was a vampire again.
A nearby cave looked perfect for a temporary shelter. The first few days were of caution for Jack, he needed to be sure no one had followed him. Weeks past, then months, no one was coming anytime soon. Jack was being hunted like the other four Fahl had talked about. Upon remembering Fahl?s cold, voice pierced Jack. Something about his dark presence made Jack shudder. Jack remained in his cave, in isolation, for years. He never hoped or wished for another to come, he learned to live on his own, somehow maintaining his humanity.
Ten years passed when, for the first time ever, something knocked on the door he put up in the cave. Jack had thought he was hallucinating, for sure. The knock came again louder, and a faintly familiar voice called out his name. Jack walked to the door, but he hesitated. If the person was one that had been chasing him, Jack would be throwing his life away. Jack opened the door to find a slightly familiar being waiting for him.
?Jack? Do you remember me? From ten years ago??
Jack tried to remember the male. The person flashed his teeth at him, he was a vampire. Then Jack remembered, he was one of the men who had followed him in the underground village. Jack never caught his name, only Raven?s and Fahl?s.
?My name is Slayer, I have been sent to recruit you for the revolution.?
?The what?? Jack asked surprised. ?Slayer, what are you talking about??
?You remember Fahl. He, he has turned, we need you to join us.? Slayer said holding out a sword. ?You are our only hope to fight this war, and are the only one who can kill Fahl.?
