Brandon High mourning teacher, cheerleading coach

By JOHN CEBALLOS | The Tampa Tribune

Students at Brandon High School will wear bright colors today and draw black diamonds on their wrists to honor Heather Hall, the school's cheerleading coach and math teacher who died Tuesday.

The school is still mourning the loss of one of its most popular teachers. Just 28, Hall died after a long battle with cancer.

"She was an amazing young lady who was always willing to go the extra mile and who affected a lot of students," said Tibor Kovacs, Brandon High's assistant principal for administration. "She was made for this."

Hall was hired five years ago and found a home at the high school, which named her its teacher of the year last year.

"Kids would fight to try and get in her classroom," said Dina Langston, Brandon High's assistant principal for curriculum, who hired Hall.

Hall was first diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma in 1999. In February 2010, doctors found masses in her abdomen, and she began treatment. By November 2011, the cancer had progressed and spots were discovered in her brain.

"Besides being a teacher, she was also a mentor to all of her students and a heck of a fighter," Langston said. "She had a great smile, and she was a beautiful person inside and out."

Plant City First Baptist Church will host a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today and a service at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Brandon High will also host a 5K run on Dec. 1 in Hall's honor. The event was originally intended to help raise money for her battle against cancer but will now double as a celebration of her life. For more information on the run, call (813) 744-8120.
