Dog Killed by Swarm of Bees | KTXL FOX40

WATERFORD-

The owner of a dog killed by a swarm of bees wants to warn dog owners in the central valley that their pets could suffer the same fate.

Buffy was a 10-year-old Australian Shepard mix that was tied to a tree when its owner Diane Adams and her boyfriend went to church. When they came back they found Buffy covered with bees from a hive placed at a nearby orchard.

Adams? daughter Beverly Henry said they grew up around orchards and bees but had never seen bees so aggressive.

?Had we known bees could be that aggressive, she never would have left her there,? said Henry.

They now say it was a mistake to tie up the dog close to a hive. They suspect the bees were agitated when the hive was moved earlier that evening.

?My mother is allergic to bees but that didn?t matter. She screamed and did whatever she could to get the bees away,? said Henry.

A water hose finally did the trick, although Adams and her boyfriend were stung multiple times.

The staff at the Taylor Veterinary Hospital in Turlock counted 50 stings.

?There were so many that she went into shock,? said veterinarian Craig Brooks.

Brooks said bees are not territorial around the almond trees they pollinate during the spring, but they are around their hives which are often moved to different parts of an orchard. ?Brooks said it was important to keep track of where hives are and keep pets away from them.

Pets can be allergic to the sting, and one sting can be a problem for a pet. ?Brooks said bees actually killing a dog is highly unusual.

Extensive efforts to save Buffy?s life failed. Now, Adams wants to make sure she didn?t die in vain.

?We want them to know to hear our story and take more precautions than they normally would,? said Henry.

An account has been set up at Bank of the West in Waterford under the name ?Buffy Adams? to help defray the $2,500 medical expense of trying to save Buffy?s life. The account number is 030837260.
